About One Rep Max (1RM) Estimations

A one-repetition maximum (1RM) is the maximum amount of weight that a person can lift for a single repetition with full range of motion. Estimating 1RM from submaximal sets (3–10 reps) avoids the acute injury risk of true maximal testing.

Brzycki Formula (1993)

Weight / (1.0278 - 0.0278 × Reps). One of the most accurate formulas for sets under 10 reps.

Epley Formula (1985)

Weight × (1 + 0.0333 × Reps). Widely used in powerlifting for squat and bench press.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

A one-repetition maximum formula estimates the heaviest single repetition from a submaximal weight and repetition count. Different equations can produce different values.

Example to check

Under the Epley formula, 60 kg lifted for five repetitions estimates 60 × (1 + 5/30) = 70 kg.

Before using the result

A formula estimate is not proof that lifting that load is safe. Accuracy usually worsens with high repetition counts; technique, fatigue and exercise choice matter.
