Understanding MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)

The Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) is a physiological measure expressing the energy cost of physical activities. One MET is defined as the energy expended while sitting quietly at rest, equivalent to approximately 3.5 ml of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute (or ~1 kcal per kg per hour).

Light (< 3.0 METs)

Desk work, casual strolling, light housework. Does not noticeably raise heart rate.

Moderate (3.0 – 6.0 METs)

Brisk walking (3.5 mph), recreational cycling, light weight training. Accelerates heart rate.

Vigorous (> 6.0 METs)

Running, competitive soccer, lap swimming, circuit training. Causes deep breathing.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Activity expenditure is estimated from the selected activity intensity, body mass and duration. MET-based models express activity cost relative to a reference resting rate.

Example to check

Using the common approximation kcal = MET × kg × hours, an activity assigned 4 METs for a 70 kg person over half an hour is about 140 kcal.

Before using the result

Different MET conventions can give slightly different totals. Gross expenditure includes resting energy; net expenditure excludes it. Fitness, terrain, technique and intensity vary between people.
