About Ideal Body Weight Formulas

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas were initially developed by physicians and pharmacologists to calculate precise medication dosages (such as theophylline, digoxin, aminoglycosides) where fat mass distributes drugs differently than lean mass.

Devine Formula (1974)

The most widely used IBW equation in clinical medicine and pharmacology today to adjust clearance and dosage regimes.

Robinson Formula (1983)

An empirical modification of Devine's equation designed to better match US survey populations.

Miller Formula (1983)

Modified parameters that yield slightly higher target values for taller individuals.

Hamwi Formula (1964)

Simple bedside clinical rule: 106 lbs for 5 ft + 6 lbs/in for men, 100 lbs + 5 lbs/in for women.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Ideal-weight formulas are reference calculations based mainly on height, with different equations and sex settings producing different estimates. They do not identify one correct weight for an individual.

Example to check

At the same height, changing the selected formula can produce a different reference weight. Compare the formula labels before interpreting any difference.

Before using the result

Muscle mass, body proportions, age, pregnancy and health conditions are not fully represented. Treat the output as a reference and avoid using it as a required weight target.
