Understanding Healthy Body Weight

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), maintaining a body weight within the BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 significantly decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.

Important Limitations to Keep in Mind

  • Muscular Athletes: Dense muscle mass can push BMI above 25.0 while maintaining low body fat.
  • Elderly Adults: A slightly higher BMI (23.0 to 27.0) is often protective against frailty in individuals over 65.
  • Ethnic Variations: The WHO notes that some Asian populations experience metabolic risks at a lower BMI threshold (≥ 23.0).

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Adult BMI reference weights are found by rearranging BMI = weight ÷ height². Multiply a chosen adult BMI reference by height in meters squared to estimate a corresponding weight.

Example to check

At 1.80 m, a BMI of 18.5 corresponds to about 59.94 kg. The upper adult healthy-weight boundary is below a BMI of 25, corresponding to below 81 kg.

Before using the result

These are population screening references, not a personalized safe weight range. Children and teens require age-specific interpretation, and pregnancy or muscularity can limit usefulness.
