Understanding your calculation
Method, example and limitations
How the calculation works
Basal metabolic rate estimates energy used at rest from a selected equation. Height, weight, age and the equation settings influence the estimate; activity adjustments represent a separate step.
Example to check
For Mifflin–St Jeor using the male equation, age 30, 70 kg and 175 cm gives 10×70 + 6.25×175 − 5×30 + 5 = 1,648.75 kcal/day at rest.
Before using the result
This is not a calorie prescription. Illness, pregnancy, age, body composition and activity can change actual energy needs; a clinician or dietitian can assess individual needs.
