Volume Calculator

Math

Calculate the volume of standard 3D solids including spheres, cylinders, cones, rectangular prisms, cubes, capsules, pyramids, ellipsoids, and triangular prisms with unit conversions and exact π outputs.

Presets:
SPHERE Volume (m³)
523.598776 m³ (166.67π m³) Surface Area: 314.1593 m²
r

Volume Across Units (Converted from m³)

Cubic Meters (m³) 523.5988
Liters (L) 523,598.78
US Liquid Gallons 138,320.16
Cubic Feet (ft³) 18,490.7162
Cubic Inches (in³) 31,951,957.69
Cubic Yards (yd³) 684.8413

Calculation Steps

1 1. Sphere Volume Formula
V = ⁴⁄₃ · π · r³ = ⁴⁄₃ × π × 5³ = 166.67π ≈ 523.598776

Four-thirds π multiplied by radius cubed.

2 2. Sphere Surface Area
A = 4 · π · r² = 4 × π × 5² = 100.00π ≈ 314.159265

Total outer surface enclosing the sphere.

How This Calculator Works

Volume is the measure of the three-dimensional space enclosed by a boundary or occupied by an object. The basic SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³), with liters (L) commonly used for fluid capacities.

📐 Standard Geometric 3D Volume Formulas
Sphere: V = ⁴⁄₃πr³ | Cylinder: V = πr²h | Cone: V = ⅓πr²h | Box: V = lwh
Capsule: V = πr²h + ⁴⁄₃πr³ (cylinder body plus two hemispherical caps)
Pyramid: V = ⅓ · Base_Area · h
Ellipsoid: V = ⁴⁄₃π · a · b · c
Triangular Prism: V = ½ · b · h · L

Key Mathematical Rules & Properties

Cavalieri’s Principle

Two solids of equal height have equal volumes if their cross-sections made by planes at equal distances from the base always have equal areas.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Volume measures three-dimensional space. Choose the correct solid and apply its formula with all lengths in compatible units.

Example to check

A rectangular solid 2 m by 3 m by 4 m has volume 24 m³. A cylinder uses π × radius² × height.

Before using the result

Radius and diameter differ by a factor of two. Hollow spaces, irregular shapes and external versus internal dimensions can change usable volume.
