Understanding your calculation
Method, example and limitations
How the calculation works
Stair planning divides total rise into a whole number of risers and relates the horizontal run to tread depth. Riser count and tread count can differ by one.
Example to check
A total rise of 120 inches divided into 16 equal risers gives a 7.5-inch rise per step.
Before using the result
A mathematical fit is not a building-code check. Headroom, landings, handrails, tread geometry and local rules require independent verification.
