Understanding your calculation
Method, example and limitations
How the calculation works
Average speed equals distance divided by elapsed time. Convert both inputs to consistent units before converting the final speed.
Example to check
Covering 150 km in two hours gives an average speed of 75 km/h, regardless of variation during the journey.
Before using the result
Average speed does not describe peak speed or a safe driving speed. Include stops consistently when deciding whether to use moving or elapsed time.
