Recommended Mulch Depths

  • 2 inches (5 cm): Annual flower beds, vegetable plots, and soil top-dressing where roots are shallow.
  • 3 inches (7.5 cm): Standard optimal depth for perennial flower beds, shrubs, and ornamental trees.
  • 4 inches (10 cm): Play areas, walking paths, or heavy weed suppression. Avoid piling over 4" near tree trunks ("mulch volcanoes").

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Mulch volume equals covered area multiplied by layer depth after converting depth to the same length unit.

Example to check

An area of 100 ft² with a depth of 3 inches needs 25 ft³, or about 0.926 yd³, before allowance.

Before using the result

Settling, uneven ground, product moisture and bag volume affect ordering. Avoid excessive depth around plant stems and follow appropriate landscaping guidance.
