Understanding Foreign Exchange (Forex)

The foreign exchange market is the world's largest financial market, where global currencies trade against each other in currency pairs such as EUR/USD or USD/JPY. Exchange rates fluctuate continuously based on relative interest rates, economic inflation, geopolitical stability, and central bank monetary policies.

Hidden Foreign Transaction Fees

When exchanging money abroad or shopping internationally, banks and payment processors charge two separate costs:

  • FX Spread / Markup: The difference between the interbank mid-market exchange rate and the retail rate offered by the institution (often 1% to 4%).
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: A flat surcharge (typically 1% to 3%) assessed by credit card networks on non-domestic currency transactions.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Conversion multiplies the amount by the selected exchange rate, then deducts the modeled percentage fee. The built-in rates are undated illustrative examples; a positive custom rate overrides them.

Example to check

Converting 100 at a custom rate of 2 gives 200 before fees. With a 5% modeled fee, the fee is 10 and the estimated net received is 190.

Before using the result

Use a current quote from your bank or provider for real transactions. Buy/sell spreads, minimum charges, settlement dates and other fees can differ from this simplified percentage fee.
