Circle Calculator

Math

Calculate radius, diameter, circumference, and area of a circle with exact π representations. Also solve circular sectors, arc lengths, chord lengths, and segment areas.

Presets:
Circle Solved
Center r = 5.00 d = 10.00

Primary Metrics (Exact π & Decimal)

Radius (r) 5
Diameter (d) 10
Circumference (C) 31.4159 10π
Area (A) 78.5398 25π

Algebraic Derivations

1 1. Given Radius (r)
r = 5

Radius is the distance from the center to any point on the perimeter.

2 2. Diameter (d)
d = 2r = 2 × 5.0000 = 10.0000

The straight-line distance passing through the center connecting two boundary points.

3 3. Circumference (C)
C = 2πr = 10π ≈ 31.415927

Perimeter or distance around the circle.

4 4. Area (A)
A = πr² = 25π ≈ 78.539816

The 2D surface enclosed by the circle boundary.

How This Calculator Works

A circle is a shape consisting of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given center point. The ratio of circumference to diameter is always the mathematical constant π (pi ≈ 3.14159265).

📐 Fundamental Circle Formulas
d = 2r | C = 2πr = πd | A = πr² = ¼πd²
Radius (r): Distance from center to any edge point
Diameter (d): Straight line across circle through center: d = 2r
Circumference (C): Perimeter or boundary length: C = 2πr
Arc Length (s): s = r · θ (where θ is in radians)
Sector Area: A_sector = ½ · r² · θ
Segment Area: A_segment = ½ · r² · (θ - sin(θ))

Key Mathematical Rules & Properties

Exact vs Decimal Pi

Exact values retain the π symbol (e.g. 10π), while decimal approximations evaluate π ≈ 3.14159...

Converting Degrees to Radians

Multiply degrees by π / 180 to convert to radians: θ_rad = θ_deg × (π / 180).

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

A circle with radius r has diameter 2r, circumference 2πr and area πr².

Example to check

With radius 3, diameter is 6, circumference is approximately 18.850 and area is approximately 28.274 square units.

Before using the result

Confirm whether the input is radius or diameter. Circumference uses length units, while area uses square units.
