How This Calculator Works

How modern computing overcomes 64-bit floating-point limitations to compute thousands of digits with exact precision

📐 Hardware Floating-Point Boundary vs BigInt
\text{IEEE-754 Safe Integer Limit} = 2^{53} - 1 = 9{,}007{,}199{,}254{,}740{,}991
Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER: 2⁵³ - 1 (approx 9.007 × 10¹⁵). Beyond this limit, standard Javascript numbers round to powers of 2.
BigInt (Arbitrary Precision): A native data structure that represents integers of arbitrary length without rounding or loss of bits.
Digit Count: The exact count of base-10 numerical digits in the final evaluated result.

Key Mathematical Rules & Properties

Exact Integer Arithmetic

BigInt addition, subtraction, and multiplication are 100% exact. There is never any floating-point approximation error.

Division with Remainder

BigInt division truncates toward zero. The Division Theorem guarantees a = q · b + r, where r = a mod b is the remainder.

Super-Exponential Factorials

Factorial grows rapidly: n! = 1 × 2 × ... × n. For example, 100! produces a 158-digit number with 24 trailing zeros.

Large Modular Powers

Exponents such as 2²⁵⁶ evaluate to exact 78-digit numbers without losing precision, fundamental in cryptographic hashing and key derivation.

Worked Example

Evaluate 100! (100 Factorial) with exact precision

  1. Multiply consecutive integers from 1 through 100: 1 × 2 × 3 × ... × 100
  2. Standard 64-bit IEEE-754 numbers overflow to Infinity after 170! and lose precision after 15 digits
  3. BigInt computes all 158 decimal digits exactly, down to the final trailing zero

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do standard calculators round large numbers or show "Infinity"?

Most calculators store numbers in standard 64-bit floating-point format (IEEE 754), which only allocates 53 bits for precision (about 15 to 17 decimal digits) and maxes out at 1.79 × 10³⁰⁸. Numbers exceeding that overflow to Infinity.

Where is arbitrary-precision arithmetic used in the real world?

It is indispensable in modern RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography, blockchain smart contracts (which track crypto tokens in 256-bit wei integers), astronomy, and mathematical number theory.

Does this calculator support decimals?

BigInt is designed specifically for exact integer operations without decimal rounding. For numbers with decimal fractions or scientific notation, explore our Scientific Notation and Rounding calculators.

Is there a limit on how big the numbers can be?

Numbers can have thousands of digits, constrained only by available browser memory. Safe limits are placed on factorials (<= 200) and power exponents (<= 2000) to keep execution under a fraction of a millisecond.

Understanding your calculation

Method, example and limitations

How the calculation works

Large-number arithmetic combines entered operands using the selected operation and supported numeric precision. Exact integer arithmetic and rounded decimal arithmetic have different limits.

Example to check

123456789 + 1 = 123456790 is a simple carry check. Multiplying any supported value by one should preserve it.

Before using the result

Do not assume unlimited precision from the calculator’s name. Check digit limits, division rounding and the representation of very large or very small results.
