Understanding your calculation
Method, example and limitations
How the calculation works
Data-transfer time divides data size by transfer rate after matching units. Network speeds are commonly bits per second, while file sizes commonly use bytes.
Example to check
An 80 megabit payload at a sustained 10 megabits per second takes eight seconds before protocol overhead.
Before using the result
One byte is eight bits. Real throughput is lower than a nominal link rate because of overhead, congestion, latency and server limits.
